Just don’t go to Vietnam.
No you shouldn’t let these scams put you off, they happen all over the world, even here in the UK, it just helps to know before you go
Lol you mean just don’t listen to yourself Chippewa I. Wonderful country, amazing culture, beach, landscape, friendly people, and best food in the world. Recommend everyone visit
livinglifestyle yeah same here! Highly recommend going and loved my 7weeks out there. But like anywhere else in the world, you get the scammers, even here in the U.K!
It’s sad when you do a search on a country and the main topic that comes up is how to avoid a scam.
It is unfortunately mate.
The key is to be alert and a great time, I’ve visited Vietnam twice, once with friends and once solo. It’s one of my favorite destinations. If you suspect something then you’re probably right. Politely smile and say khong cam on lai tam biet (kong come on leh tam biet) meaning no thank you goodbye then walk away.
Mrherbalful can u give any advise on what to do in Vietnam, I am not quite sure if i should go there
Hi jd!
+Melodz Cortez hi thanks for watching.
Your welcome jd
Yep they are all pretty much in it together you’ve just gotta put up with it sadly. Nice country mostly nice people but with extreme poverty breeds crime sadly.
I can add to this. My friends and I were walking around Ho Kiem Lake Hanoi, when a guy approached us and asked us if we wanted to by some weed, we declined with a smile and walked away. 30 minutes later we were walking back past the same spot when we saw the same guy again, this time laughing and talking with a cop, they seemed to know each other a bit to well for a drug dealer and a cop.
This a a typical scam where you buy the drugs, the cop busts you then asks for a bribe and out of fear all tourist will pay. the drugs are then returned to the dealer and they wait for their next victim. While I don’t advise taking drugs in foreign countries, some people will do it anyway, and it’s best to befriend some expats or locals you can trust to do your bidding for you.
+Mrherbalful thanks for adding that man. Yeah I got offered a lot of weed in HCMC and declined. This happens in Bali too, drug dealer sells drugs, calls cop. Drugs go back to drug dealer and cop and dealer split money and you have to bribe the cop. Everyone’s a winner except for you!
DONT BUY THE SUN!!!!
Excellent
+BRUCIE BOY thanks man I appreciate that
After returning to Vietnam about 10 times as a “Việt Kiều”, I would say that Vietnam is a country of scammers. When you are out in the street you got scammed by other people. When you’re at home then you got scammed by your own relatives. The relatives often come by (as a visit) and then demand some money. I have an uncle that actually lectured me so that I will provide him with some kind of regular support money. His lecture was based on the Asian concept of “respect the elders”. Other relatives always had a sob story like so-and-so just had an accident and badly in need of money. Or so-and-so need support so that he/she can finish school. From my experience, scamming to the Vietnamese was a way to prove that they’re not naive – but instead, you are!
That said, I also have met people who are hard working, honest, spiritual an above all fun to be with.
Unfortunately, it’s true. If the government cared about its people, then scamming wouldn’t be a huge issue. The people will do anything, includes breaking principles & morals, to get money & try to survive.
Yeah exactly unfortunately in countries of corruption the people have to do what they have to do to survive.
The Philippines is reeked with these family scams too, because of the size of them.
You got it spot on. As a westerner, you will NEVER be included as a full family member. I’ve heard VN say this without shame or reservation. The annoyance is though they are quite happy to siphon you of money.
Thanks for the advice!
+Cody Popejoy you’re welcome my friend.
Very helpful. Thanks ??????
+The Nesoi you’re very welcome. Have a good day.
If the government does not care about tourists, then you guys should boycott traveling to this country
Personally I’m not bothered about the scams, I do my research before I go to a country, scams exist in all forms in any country you travel to. Don’t let this put you off if you are thinking of going mate
It’s part of the learning curve, things get better with experience, meanwhile young apprentice we shall pay our dues. : ). Good tips, heading there in a few weeks, then again in January for a couple of months.
the only taxi to take in Vietnam is Vinasun. If you get any other you will be scammed, end off.
Thanks for the heads up!
Yeah I knew that sadly I didn’t get to one in time figured I’d just end up paying more not getting robbed that on the web or in the lonely planet. These guys were good I’ll give them that if I see them again I’ll give them more than that.
Vinisun is the only taxi we take when we go there, they are honest and taxi’s are clean
Visiting Vietnam in 2 months and your video is just really helpful! Great advice! Thanks!!
You’re welcome, have a great time and if you need any ideas of where to go and what to do then feel free to ask me,
thanks for the tips. amazing video
You’re more than welcome, have a safe a trip.
A Funny Story But True} A Mate of mine got totally pissed in Saigon & was approached by a Transvite riding a push bike & ringing his bell to Solicate business. The Transvite offered him a cheap massage in his hotel which he accepted.Well after the massage was over the Transvite started screaming ”Rape” & demanded 1 Million Dong or he would call the police. To avoid the cop’s & everything else he paid the money.Beware of Transvites riding bicycles & offering cheap massages. He say the funny side of it a few weeks later Ha!Ha!..
Good info – thanks mate!
You’re welcome mate, safe travels
Thank you!! very helpful.
You’re welcome!
Lost 250 US dollars from the airport taxi form ho chi min airport arseholes…do not get a non meter taxi from ho chi min as soon as you walk out of the airport some nice friendly man will hit you with a cheap ride…repeat DO NOT DO THIS…order a taxi inside the airport I couldn’t find the metered ones at the airport and before I knew it tired and flustered they had managed to steal 250 US off me. I’m going back there Sunday and I will file a police report for all the good it will do me.
You can’t blame people for getting robbed mate. It happens anywhere in the world, you can do all the research you like but if someone is going to rob you they will rob you. Just go to any dodgy part of a city or town in the UK or anywhere in the world and it can easily happen.
Well I’m Vietnamese and I know that a lot of foreigners don’t know about these kind of scams so be always aware because lots of scammers point are foreigners since they don’t expect this kind of scam.
I feel you Martin Hansen and i know the feeling of being robbed. Happened to me in Milan, Italy when my wife and I tried to use the subway. It was early in the morning and we strayed all the way to the train platform without any tickets – realizing our mistake, we turned back only to be met by 6 or 7 enforcement officers who shoved me to the wall and demanded that we pay 34 euros each in fine for failing to produce tickets.
I’m just curious, so you actually volunteered to pay $250 US?
Thats why I love uber and grab. Always choose them instead of regular taxis on an airport.
Yeah same here mate. If Uber or grab is available I’ll always use them.
I’ll give the answers (I’m Vietnamese,I live here)
short-changed: true- not so common
Shoe shiners: true – popular in ha-noi
Fake taxis:true-rare
Basket holders:rare
No prices:rare
Hotel shut down: rare
I found the shirt changing very common and also the taxi scam. It wasn’t that they were fake taxis, they were real, but kept demanding more money.
Yes, I had the taxi scam… There was even a meter, but a “manipulated” one.
Was your starting rate really high?
