nice video mate, nice idea!! was in thailand 2014 was AMAZING but your right just have to be aware! Subbed 🙂
Share The Moment thanks mate, yeah I just put a few ideas together I wish I knew about when I first went in 2015. Thanks, appreciate that. Where abouts did you go in Thailand?
Are you going back to Philippines? You should visit Siargao island and siquijor
Alena mich Maserati I will be going back to there at some point. Didn’t see enough of the beautiful country. Those two places are high on my list and nearly went there. Any other places you’d recommend. I’ve done Cebu, Palawan and Bohol.
tourist police is useless in thailand, they just tell you to pay
+Initial D yeah I heard it’s a bit hit and miss with the tourist police, but apparently they’re still meant to be better than the normal police. I guess money talks out in Asia.
In 20 years have been scammed once and the Tourist Police were brilliant. Could not have asked for better and they caught the individual that ripped me off
its amazing that people book holidays without doing research on the country your going too.. if you get scammed then its your own fault
I agree to some extent, but I think when you’re planning your travels you have so many other things to think about like Visas, flights, transport, where to go what to do and think things like this get forgotten or not even thought about
No sympathy with people being scammed in Thailand, its your own fault for being so Dim lol
i would say 50% of thai are ok and all rest are all out for your money call it what you want scam ect
I think that maybe true in the very common touristy areas of Thailand, but venture out and you’ll find they are so friendly and helpful
Cute. 99.9% of Thai people are hard working….scammers. Most of them see tourists as potential targets. Very dishonest people unfortunately.
+shibal sekki only in the popular tourist areas, get out to where the real locals live and you’ll find some amazing locals. The scammers go where the tourists are and it doesn’t matter where you’re from, you’ll always find people that try to scam you.
They’re are honest mostly I got helped a lot buy the Thais in the past you want scams try Cambodia feels like everyone there is out to scam you.
in case your not aware the passport you carry does not belong to you it is the property of the country who issued it to you and your embassy wont be very pleased if you hand over your passport to rent something, if you feel you need to hire then make the hire people accept a photo copy of it or just walk away, most scams happen because people do not use plain old common sense and go to places like Thailand and think they know it all but know nothing, a lot of people get scammed when they have been drinking and there guard is down also general carelessness leaves you wide open to be had, I visit Thailand 3 times a year for many years now and as the guy in the video says the majority of Thais are honest but i am always on my guard out there even though i know the country so well as i said before general common sense will see you through, if you have never been to Thailand go and enjoy it dont be put off
+Barry Jackson I never actually knew that your passport wasn’t your own possession. Yeah I mostly give my passport, but I never had any issues. Hired bikes around 20/30 times during my trip and never had any issues. But if something feels wrong it probably is. But I’ve not really hired bikes in the areas where these scams happen and I mostly hire from my hostel. I agree mate, apply some common sense and don’t be put off.
You should always hire from hostel or hotel. It’s the only safe way.
I agree mate, always go through the hostel/hotel where possible
The other thing to remember is legally when you are a tourist in Thailand, you are required to carry your passport on you at all times, so that is another reason not to give your passport over to a rental shop, just give them a photocopy.
Never give anyone your passport!
+Tim Bennett sometimes you have to in case you damage their scooter so they’ll know you pay the repairs. I know it’s easier said than done but I’ve mainly hired bikes from my hostels and it’s always been fine.
I love Thailand. My experience is to keep away from tourist areas and expats. Thai people rely on scamming tourists. If you speak some Thai, dress smart, and act decently then Thai people like you.
Yeah I hit up the main touristy places on this trip, but when I go back I’ll visit the not so popular areas.
How can you say you where ripped off when you said you didn’t work out the price correctly! It does make me smile how many people are so stupid when coming to to Thailand. It’s a great place and I’ve never been scammed in 12 years of coming here but then I always do a bit of research and im not guillible.
Yeah to be honest with you mate, I was fresh to travelling, straight off a 16 hour flight with no sleep, so my brain wasn’t working. The reason why I say this a scam is because I paid well over the odds of what I should’ve paid for a boat trip, they knew what they were doing, (granted I shouldn’t have accepted it) Thailand is a great place, I love it, that’s not what this video is about. Just warning those new to travelling to learn from my mistakes and be aware of the potential scams before people go as Asia can be quite a shock for those going there for the first time.
16hr Flight ??? From where ??
You can get scammed anywhere in Asia…I did in Sri Lanka and China (3 times)…not unique to thailand
Yeah I know, scams exist all over the world, but I made a video specifically for Thailand as that’s where most backpackers go for their first time in Asia.
for first timers coming into bangkok airport sometimes they might aproach you for a taxi and ask a price that is more than 10 times higher. just tell them you will go 1 floor down to the taxi stop and take a taxi there. these are the meter taxi’s and they are forced by law to use the meter. and you get a piece of paper with the cab details too. one more scam is at the palace. before coming up to the entrance someone comes up to you to tell the palace is closed and try to get you into the tuk tuk scam. just ignore that person and go to the entrance.
Absolute legend mate. Thanks for sharing man. I’ve only taken the taxi once and got that bit of paper like you said and got the official taxi. But I can see how that would happen though.
If any Thai person approaches you and speaks fluent English, it is a scam.
Good morning John. You must be a New Zealander. You’ve just summed up our Government! You’ve made a very valid remark-I would have missed that point entirely if I were in Thailand and here in New Zealand.
NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER!!!!! GIVE ANYONE YOUR PASSPORT!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then go to a photo shop and have them make a Passport ID w/the visa printed on the back. Problem solved. I’m just saying, people should never hand over their passport for a motorbike, bike, fishing pole, no matter the case. You may have done it many times, but it’s the ONE time you don’t get it back it’ll come back to bite you. I’m not criticizing you or anyone. The Passport is too important to hand over to anyone. The only one other than me that touches it is the Immigration Officer. 🙂
That’s a good idea never thought of that. Yeah there’s bound to be that one time where it gets you.
You seem like a good dude! I did enjoy your video though. It was sincere and you offered good advice too. God Bless!
Thanks Bill appreciate it my friend. God bless you too!
sorry but that is an uninformed rookie statement
TAXI BEWARE !!!
PS: been travelling to Thailand for more than 10 years and speak decent Thai and this happens !
I recently was in Bangkok spending the last few days of my trip there and had to take a taxi from the airport to the hotel near Chatuchak Market. So from the airport first off you have to pay extra 50 bath that is well indicated. I get in the taxi and I confirm that he is using the meter, meanwhile his meter is covered with some decorative cloth. I am like OK, take a photo of his ID and taxi number!Get to destination the guy gets out and says 1000 bath, I was like WTF, asked your on the meter right? So he flips up the cloth thing and it was 330+50=380 so he says give 400 then…anyway I was pissed and basically told the dude hey I decide how much I will pay (tip). So I blast him in Thai telling him why you so dishonest, that as he wants money he just be honest and do good work and for sure he will get tips from foreigners instead of scamming. Many Thais are opportunist so just beware…
Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah for some reason they think they have the leverage over you. This is why I take Uber and Grab wherever available. I don’t trust many Taxi drivers in the western world as they may take you on longer routes to get more money on the meter. The more the scummy taxi drivers keep this up, the more likely people will use services like Uber. I believe a similar scam also exists in Vietnam, thought I’d give you the heads ups in case youre heading that way.
?? Did you not take a Taxi from arrivals because it is all monitored and the drivers have to comply with airport regulations hence the issuing of a Ticket which you should keep. In years gone by you could flag a Taxi from departures that has just dropped off and pay a much lesser price. If you do it now and the Police see you both you and the driver will get a huge fine.
I mean this kindly, mugs get mugged! Use some common sense!
True, but with the likes of us blogging as we are, and the travel blogs, talking to people who know Thailand well, one would think that folks would learn. So we are doing some good. We have subscribed to you, if you would return the compliment that would be great. I should say I am in my late 60s now, and have been going to Thailand for a long time, and am married to a Thai, so know the country quite well. Going out again in a months time but we tend to spend our holiday at our home up in Udon, still have not seen another fallang in the village! Choc dee.
Very nice man. Awesome mate I’ll sub you back! How’s living in Thailand? It’s a beautiful country, need to go back and spend more time there. I share an apartment in Australia with 4 Thai people and they’re all so nice as Thai people are, were always having good food.
We had to come back to Wales for the children’s education, but we get back to Thailand as often as we can. Going out there for March. Just heard of the latest scam, don’t think anyone has published it yet, so will film it today and post soonest. Do me a big favour and share with your buddies in Australia. Choc dee.
spot on mate
Thanks for the heads up, mate. Happy travels.
You’re welcome Alex, safe travels mate!
The biggest scam, Paying a thai ho for a no condom then getting super knob rot that you cant cure !
This is not a scam as eventually you get what you want plus some bonus for stupidity.
tileq it’s a joke bro. Learn how to see one
As stated this is not a scam. How can it be if you get a freebie? 😉
tileq ????
Probably the best comment I’ve ever had on my channel!
Nice video. Thanks. In my 30 years of frequent visits to Thailand I learnt that being very humble and friendly with Thai people kept me out of any trouble (unlike my first few visits when I was occasionally wild and and arrogant to Thai people – had no end of “incidents” then). Mind you, a foreigner riding a motorcycle in tourist spots in Thailand will pay “fines” to police for any soft reason – unavoidable.
Every video I have watched on scams recommends to not give up your passport. So I would never give up mine, I think your asking for trouble to hand over your passport. Just don’t do it.
