FYI

1. We do not think everyone in Vietnam is a scammer, this was an isolated incident that happened to us. These things can happen in any country you visit; this just happened to us in Vietnam. We weren't even aware this was a common tourist trap until the LOCAL Vietnamese people had informed us that we fell straight into it. We apologise if you were in any way offended, but it is what happened. No doubt we LOVED Vietnam and the people we met.

2. Do your research before you travel. We didn't expect this to happen to us but it can happen any where. Although people seem nice, just be aware of what is happening. HE approached us when we were minding our own business and following us. He was extremely nice to us and was ironic that HE was warning us about dodgy people in Vietnam. Things can happen pretty fast so just be aware. We learnt our lesson. It can happen anywhere.

3. We did not want the coconuts for free. We apologise for wrong wording. We just stressed and thought he was offering for us to try it for free. It happened so fast and he didn't ask us if we actually wanted to buy any. He had simply just cut the coconut and handed it to us without saying anything. We were confused and stressed at the situation at the time.

    1. +Khaki_ 323 hey man! Yeh we definitely enjoyed it! Sorry for taking so long with the videos!

  1. That guy is just trying to make some bread, you got to experience what he has to endure for 10 hours a day, I couldn’t do it, I dislike coconut water lol

    1. Absolutely understand where you’re coming from with this but it was all about the principle – he simply did not ask if we wanted coconut and proceeded to chop 2 anyway. The price was ridiculous compared to anywhere else.

If he was honest from the beginning, we would not hesitate to buy from him (because coconuts are generally cheap) and we would have given him a tip for being so friendly.

Later on we found out from various tour guides that this is a common scam practice in Ho Chi Minh City, especially around the war museums.

    2. JohnMalieTV it was blistering hot when I was in Vietnam, a couple of times on the really busy streets I caught a taxi for like 50m just to cross the street lol

  2. The drone footage looks AMAZING. I loved seeing the rooftop pool all bird’s eye like that! I honestly didn’t have much idea about what Saigon looks like, if there’s EVER any time of the year when it’s not super hot I’d love to go!

    1. haha it is so hot there and pretty humid. You’ll get crispy in no time haha but definitely put Vietnam on your list. Definite must do 😀

    2. Do you have any helpful tips for staying alive? (In Japan it would just be ‘BUY A BIG BOTTLE OF POCARI SWEAT’ wouldn’t it .DD)

    3. Water water water! We only drank bottled water and only from 2 brands – Aquafina (made by PEPSI) and Dasani (made by Coca-cola).

    4. Kakibot
where you from? South Vietnam (Saigon aka HCM.c) have 2 season, dry & wet rain season. but the wet season, it cooler but still hot weather, not like raining all day but kinda a couple hours in a day but not raining evryday, depend on the day
in summer (dry seasons) it hot but still able to live lolz, it not like Sahara or Mideast, it happen to all country in Southeast Asia (Thai,Philippines,etc..)
Btw, water bottle is SAFE a& sale everywhere of any corner in market, shop, mini stores,etc..
And COCONUT IS SAFE!! what the hell ppl thing about coconut??? their hard sell cover it amazing, you can keep them in a month!!
But i recommend buy or use coconut with full green sell, when you buy it they will cut it for you to drink
Vietnamese love to drink fresh coconut & fresh sugar can (nuoc mia) everyday.
I know, cause i’m Vietnamese living in Vietnam
ps: there have many Japanese living & working in big city in VN
But i think with quite ppl, it must better travel smaller city like Hue, Hoi An, Danang, Pathan Thiet (all city from middle center in Vietnam) or the far-end of Vietnam like (Phu Quoc island, Con day island) it tropical island in the sea, not far away from the land but beautiful & , than city land.

  3. I don’t think you got scammed. I mean, you both took his “work” for a spin for the benefit of your video why should it be at his expense? Plus it was fresh coconut juice in sweltering Saigon, it was probably refreshing.

I liked the video though, you both are like-able. The random comical sound effects are weird and out of place, IMO.

    1. +Food Monster it’s true, we benefited from this experience – doesn’t make it any less unethical imo.

Regarding the sound effects – 100% agree with you there! This video was actually edited for the first time using adobe premier pro. Being the noobs we are, sounds got all muddled up during rendering process. Not sure how but we’ll look out for it for next time 😀

      Thanks for watching 🙂

    2. I had a similar experience in Hanoi. A woman didn’t even ask if I wanted to try it, she just proceeded to put the stick on my shoulder (and hurt me in the process). I firmly told her no and that was the end of it. Of course they are just trying to make money, but that doesn’t excuse them scamming tourists. There are honest ways to make a living as well.

    1. +Hung Tran Noway! 15k is SOOOO CHEAP!!! ??? so much street food could have been had with that $ haha

    1. +tam Le There’s a cat cafe there – Catina cafe lol The cats were waiting outside for the cafe to be open so they can go to work ?

    1. +mista nguyen Thanks for the recommendation – it’s actually in our next video ? and yes, it’s fantastic

    1. Glad I was not the only person who got charged that, my mate never paid me for his. – But its a good travel story and I ind it funny now, well I found it funny later that evening.

no police help you this, unless the seller beat you or whatever it break the laws
as long as you are ARGEE to buy, no matter if it expensive or cheap it cause your deal. AS I SAID UNLESS YOU DONT BUY IT BUT THEY WONT LET YOU GO OR TROUBLE YOU. IT BUSSINESE
BUT FIRST THING, YOU HAVE TO ASK PRICE FIRST IF YOU BUY ANYTHING IN SHOP OR FROM STREET SALERS.
Unless you buy thing in stores or supermarket with their public prices so no one cheating anyone cause they did PUBLICLY PRICE VERY CLEAR.
BTW, 150.000vietnam dong (VND) is alots for a coconut (depend on season) we have coconut in all season in South Vietnam (Saigon) but it cheaper when it is right season.
And buying from downtown district (dist1, the one show up in video) where have many travels & rich local living is always higher price to compare other place.
The coconut show in video, 20.000vnd, but if they sell in restaurants or hotel/resort it must have higher price of course cause of tax, place, employees so it happen to anywhere in any country.
But myself as local buying, it around 10-15.000vnd for a fresh coconut (depends on big or small size coconut)

  4. Very entertaining video! I will travel to Vietnam soon, so I was browsing around YouTube for videos. Really liked yours:D

    1. +KasumiKriss thank you for your comment, we really appreciate it! Hope you have a great time on your trip, you will love it! We can’t wait to go back.

  5. So sorry for the unfortunate event. With that being said, all third world countries will have folks hustling to survive. Keep your wits about things, be aware of your surroundings, try to blend in with the crowd, avoid anyone that approaches you on the street, and of course do your research.

    Happy travels my friends.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Yes that’s right, Vietnam unfortunately is still a developing country and it was common to see so many Vietnamese people hustling on the street. Everyone was super nice and since we obviously looked like tourists because we always had our camera out 24/7 (we didn’t blend in at all) There were probably many more occasions we were taken advantage of that we are unaware of. But anyway it shouldn’t stop anyone from travelling to Vietnam or anywhere! These things can happen. Thank you for the advice.

    1. +Alan Milewczyk Thanks Alan. Was the traffic similar to Ho Chi Minh City in Hanoi? We haven’t been just yet but are keen to visit asap when we get the chance

    2. Not been to HCM City but viewing your video, it looks exactly the same! I was amazed at the lack of road discipline, you took your life in your hands crossing the road. Having said that, if you slowly kept going, they would slow down or move around you to let you cross. Nerves of steel help, LOL.

We loved the Old City with its French style architecture combined with the ethnic culture. But be warned the temperature when we went (late February) was quite cold, the climate being very European (actually sub-tropical with 4 seasons) as they were just coming out of Winter and entering Spring. I get the impression that, by contrast, HCM City’s climate is much hotter (tropical with the usual wet and dry seasons)!

      Enjoy your visit.

    3. +Alan Milewczyk hahah yes we learnt that tactic.. you just have to keep slowly walking across the road and hope everyone moves around you. It works! Thanks for sharing, we would love to visit Old City next time, sounds beautiful. Yes from what we heard from locals, it is always hot in HCM! They told us they have two season, “hot” and “very hot” ? we were there during their ‘wet’ season and you would see the usual bouts rain but towards the afternoon – Malie

    1. +8323 9889 Hi! Thanks for the comment. We also replied to your email. But just incase..We use the Canon G7X Mark II to vlog all our videos. It’s only using the default mic on the camera but we made a DIY wind muffler and attached it to the on-board mic to help reduce wind noise. Let us know if you have more questions. – John

  6. you guys are Australian Vietnamese your English speaking very funny and look like everyone enjoyed Vietnam tourist because it’s beautiful cheap and cheerful

  7. Omg, my husband and I swear that the coconut water vendor is the same man (same clothes I’m pretty sure) that conned us back in July 2016! A true confidence man. He approached us, made small talk, and talked about how tired he was from carrying his goods. Then out of no where, same as you guys, he just chopped open two coconuts and handed it to us! Of course, we felt bad and paid him anyway. It all happened so fast, and we walked away realizing that we overpaid. We both agree though, that was a smart hustle.

    1. Now you’ll know how to react for next time like us. We still love Vietnam lol Safe travelling! ?
