You know that still doesn’t end up being a charge of insurance fraud. You have to go through with the accident, go through court, and then show your video. That’s the only way you can truly punish the criminal with insurance fraud, and this makes the whole issue so much more complicated than it needed to be for yourself. DON”T keep the footage a secret, just tell the cops during the scene of the accident. it’s not worth it to make yourself suffer just so you can punish the other guy later. That’s just plain petty and spiteful.

I think you shouldn’t tell them about the dashcam. Allow them to file a fraudulent insurance claim and suffer the consequences.
Let’s be real though, not telling will just make things more complicated. It’s a very spiteful thing to go through all that trouble just so you can make sure the other guy is more heavily punished. Providing evidence during the accident to the police will resolve the issue in the most easiest way possible. Don’t listen to these commenters saying you should keep the footage secret. That’s just selfish and does not make you any more morally correct.

You can actually get in legal trouble if you don’t tell a responding officer about the dash cam because there have been cases where people claim the footage is edited..

Dog broke free our fault fair enough, got hit by car, small mark to front right had side, woman got entire right hand panel repainted by the highest quote tendered, we had to pay. Was told it could have easily been done for less than a third of the price, ironically the driver was a work colleague of my then wife.

Exactly how much is “shitloads of money” If you’re found at fault in a crash you could be sued for millions with no insurance company to fight it out and pay it off. Never tell them you have a dashcam. Apologize for not paying attention, get their name and contact information, and tell them that you should get a police report for the insurance company so everything goes smoothly. Let them make a false statement to the police, and then show the police the video.
This one time, my friend told me that her grandpa died of cancer, and I told her I was sorry, and then the police came and arrested me for giving her grandpa cancer.
ytmndan yup, the main reason an apology is not an admission of fault is that 1) people in an imminent situation are high on adrenaline and not thinking objectively, their focus is less about legal liability and more about dealing with the situation at hand and 2) they often genuinely are sorry for what has happened, that doesn’t mean they’re responsible. What you definately shouldn’t say after a crash is “I was at fault” or “my error”, because that’s likely admissible. But a mere apology has no legal effect.
And then get paid.
