Silicone spray, coloured dye and injections: What farmers are doing to make stale veggies look fresh.

Next time you reach for the biggest, shiniest or freshest looking vegetable on the cart, think about what may have been added to it. The shocking revelations of a vegetable farmer just outside New Delhi show us the additives, injections and sprays used to make old vegetables look fresh. And according to him, he isn't the only one. All farmers do this, he says. With rising inflation and families to feed, he says poor farmers such as himself are left with no option when consumers reject even fresh, hygienic vegetables.

Silicone spray makes the vegetables look shiny and fresh, even when it's actually a few days old. Malachite green, a manufacturing dye, is added to green vegetables to make them look more vibrant, attractive and fresh. Oxytocin injections are pumped directly into vegetables like bottle gourd, making them swell in size overnight. What would otherwise have taken a week to mature, is now ready to be shipped to the market overnight.

    1. Keep up the good Work man what this Indians killing Indians this has be going to long there no Love Indian all Greedy.

    2. Spraying fruits & veggies 2 shine & look fine is not new (of course, not good also). It has been going on in the U.S. for many years; relatively new in india & other countries. But in the U.S., they don’t camouflage stale greens & veggies – it could be lot of trouble down the road….

    3. Shiva, i’m guessing that in desh too they are using food grade silicone spray along with colored wax polish which are not harmful to our system unless its consumed in large quantities for many years. In most western nations, they have been approved for use long ago. So, the title here, is of-course very dramatic!

    1. You could start with a little garden. 12m^3 are enough for growing tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, onion, peppers, pumpkins, maybe a few herbs, ect. strawberries, well not all of them at once. It doesn’t take much effort a 2-3 day a year to seed them, and depending on the crop watering it once in a while, for tomatoes and cucumbers we do it once every two days.
in my country we have a small places like that (we call them kun-fu for some reason) for rental, so it’s you could check if this is an option for you too.

    2. Manish sainwar me too. the city life is becoming too toxic. why work for high pay to buy toxic food to kill yourself. better relocate to farm life.

  4. I know America does the same people won’t buy food if they don’t look nice, for example oranges are not necessary orange but an American can’t process that so when they import them they pass by a chemical process to make them orange plus all the food modification that America is know for ( transgenic ) it’s the same but in less scale, this Indian people it’s DIY United States of America does it massively

    1. brenda muñoz I am from Arizona and had many orange trees growing in my own yard. They are orange and delicious without any processing whatsoever, that is why they are called an “orange”. lol. I think people have overactive imaginations.

    2. itachi Theonlylegend It depends on what climate they are grown in. In Arizona it gets cooler in December when the oranges are ripe and the drop in temperature makes them turn orange. If they are grown in a steady warm climate they will stay green or maybe spotted, like you said. It is not done by chemicals, it happens naturally depending on the climate.

  5. I’m sure other countries do this too, even USA. they only care about their profits not your health. best way is to grow your own fruits and veggies.
